McDonald's is ending its IBM partnership for AI-powered drive-thru ordering after receiving complaints about order accuracy. Other fast food chains, such as Wendy's and White Castle, are also testing AI-driven ordering systems. While McDonald's plans to explore voice ordering solutions more broadly, the current automated order taker will be phased out by July 26, 2024.
Despite challenges with understanding accents and order accuracy, IBM maintains that their technology is among the best in the industry. McDonald's will continue to work with IBM on other projects and has recently partnered with Google Cloud to improve restaurant operations using generative AI technology.
The future of AI in fast food drive-thrus remains uncertain, but the industry continues to explore ways to maximize efficiency and reduce costs through automation.
