McDonald's is pulling the plug on its AI-powered drive-through ordering technology in the US due to comical mishaps and bizarre misinterpreted orders. The system, using voice recognition software, was trialed in 2019 but failed to meet reliability standards. Viral videos captured orders for bacon ice cream and excessive amounts of chicken nuggets, prompting the decision to remove the technology from over 100 restaurants by the end of July. Despite this setback, McDonald's remains optimistic about the future of voice-ordering solutions for drive-thru operations. The fast-food giant assured franchisees that AI will continue to be a part of their restaurants' future, indicating that this blunder is not the end of the line for such systems.
