Microsoft is driving Windows-on-ARM into the mainstream with a new lineup of laptops from major manufacturers like Samsung, Dell, HP, and Lenovo. To provide more options for manufacturers, Microsoft is collaborating with MediaTek on an alternative chipset based on ARM cores, different from the Qualcomm-designed Snapdragon X currently in use. The MediaTek chip is set to be available in late 2023 and may potentially qualify for the Copilot+ program. MediaTek, known for its Chromebook chips, will incorporate standard ARM Cortex CPU cores and Mali/Immortalis GPUs in its Windows design. The company is also working with Nvidia on ARM-based chip development, separate from its collaboration with Microsoft. AMD is also reportedly developing an ARM-based chip for Windows, potentially using Radeon GPU technology, following the end of its partnership with Samsung. Qualcomm’s exclusivity deal with Microsoft is expected to last until 2025, impacting the release timing of the MediaTek chip.
