In April 2019, Meta executive David Ginsberg proposed to Mark Zuckerberg a research project aimed at reducing loneliness and compulsive use on Instagram and Facebook. Ginsberg highlighted the growing public concern over the addictive nature and negative impact of the platforms, especially on teens. He requested 24 engineers, researchers, and other staff to work on the project, citing a lack of resources in dealing with these crucial issues. Despite initial interest from Zuckerberg and support from other executives, such as Susan Li, the project ultimately did not receive funding due to staffing constraints. Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, also declined to finance the project. This decision sheds light on the challenges tech companies face in addressing the harmful consequences of their products while balancing financial and resource constraints.
