Meta faces injunction to halt AI training on Brazilian personal data

Brazil's data protection authority, ANPD, has issued a ban on Meta from using Brazilian personal data for training its artificial intelligence models due to the risks of harm and difficulty for users. This decision comes after Meta's update to its privacy policy in May, allowing the use of public Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram data from Brazil for AI training. ANPD's action was prompted by concerns raised by Human Rights Watch about the inclusion of personal photos of Brazilian children in AI training datasets, posing risks of deepfakes and exploitation. With Brazil being one of Meta's largest markets, the company faces potential fines if it does not comply with the ban within five working days. While Meta argues that its policy complies with privacy laws in Brazil and allows users to opt out of data usage for AI training, ANPD criticizes the presence of unnecessary obstacles hindering user choices.
