Meta misidentifying authentic images as AI-generated.defaultProps

Photographers are raising concerns about Meta wrongly labeling real photos as AI-generated, with examples like a photo taken by former White House photographer Pete Souza and an Instagram photo of the Kolkata Knight Riders winning a cricket tournament. The label only appears on mobile, not on the web, and some photographers speculate that using certain image editing tools may trigger Meta’s algorithm. Even minor edits through generative AI tools are being marked as AI-generated, leading to frustration among photographers who feel the label is being applied unfairly. Meta spokesperson Kate McLaughlin stated they are evaluating their approach based on recent feedback and working with companies to improve the labeling process. Meta’s decision to add “Made with AI” labels to photos uploaded on its platforms ahead of the election season has sparked controversy, with concerns about the lack of clarity on what triggers the label.
