Microsoft Postpones Launch of Provocative Recall AI Feature to Address Concerns
Tech & AI | June 14, 2024, 1:14 p.m.
Microsoft’s highly anticipated Copilot+ PC launch on June 18 will hold back the Recall feature, an auto-screenshotting function. This delay is due to security concerns that the company is addressing by moving Recall to a beta program accessible only to Windows Insider members. Recall is designed to act as a photographic memory of PC activity, enabling users to search through screenshots based on content. The new feature faced criticism for potential privacy flaws, prompting Microsoft to enhance security measures such as requiring Windows Hello for access. While Recall will be limited to Copilot+ PCs due to hardware requirements, a program called TotalRecall offers the feature for non-Copilot+ PCs without an ARM-based chip. Despite the delay, Microsoft assures Recall will be available soon, but with no definite timeline.
