NASCAR introduced a new electric vehicle prototype stock car at the Chicago Street Race, showcasing its commitment to sustainability alongside partner ABB. Resembling a performance crossover, the ABB NASCAR EV Prototype boasts three electric motors powered by a 78-kWh battery, generating up to 1,000kW at peak power. Despite its departure from traditional stock cars, NASCAR plans to retain fuel-burning V8s for the foreseeable future. The EV prototype sits on a modified Next Gen chassis designed for alternative fuels, developed with Chevrolet, Ford, and Toyota. NASCAR driver David Ragan test-drove the $1.5 million prototype, clocking impressive acceleration but slightly slower lap times due to added weight. As NASCAR continues to explore eco-friendly options, the ABB NASCAR EV Prototype represents a groundbreaking step towards a greener, more sustainable future in auto racing.
