Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has revealed that Apple is set to launch new AirPods equipped with infrared cameras to enhance spatial experiences with the Vision Pro headset. By 2026, Apple plans to mass-produce these AirPods with integrated IR camera modules, similar to those found in the iPhone's Face ID receiver. The addition of IR cameras to AirPods will improve the spatial computing and audio experience when used in conjunction with Apple Vision Pro and future headsets. These cameras will enable the detection of environmental image changes, allowing for a wider range of gestures and enhanced user interaction. For example, users watching a video with Apple Vision Pro and the new AirPods will have the sound source emphasize in the direction they are looking, enhancing the overall spatial audio experience. Foxconn, the Taiwanese electronics manufacturer, will be supplying the new IR component for approximately 10 million AirPods initially. While it is uncertain which AirPods model will debut this feature first, the AirPods Pro seems to be the most likely candidate due to its existing support for lossless audio exclusively with the Vision Pro.
