Effective Monday, California implemented a range of new laws covering workplace violence, housing affordability, date-rape testing kits in bars, and repairs for electronic devices. The state also requires bars to offer date-rape drug testing kits and for businesses to disclose hidden fees. Additionally, landlords now face limits on security deposits, with one month’s rent being the maximum. California has introduced an 11% excise tax on firearms, ammunition, and gun parts to fund gun violence prevention programs. Another law mandates credit card networks to assign unique codes to gun retailers for tracking purposes. The Right to Repair Act requires manufacturers to provide parts and instructions for DIY repairs on electronic devices. Workplace violence rules are now mandatory for businesses under SB 553, while SB 274 bans student suspension in K-12 for "disruption or willful defiance." Lastly, California schools must now stock menstrual products for students in grades 3 through 12.
