New York Philharmonic CEO Resigns Amid Culture Investigation: What's Next for the Orchestra?

Gary Ginstling, CEO and President of the New York Philharmonic orchestra, abruptly resigned after just one year following an investigation into the workplace culture. The Board of Directors accepted this resignation immediately. This decision came after a sex-assault scandal involving two players, Matthew Muckey and Liang Wan. Both were fired for sexual misconduct, allowed back, and then fired again over a 14-year-old rape allegation. Ginstling, who became CEO in July 2023, faced backlash for suspending the accused players with pay and launching a fresh investigation. The orchestra is now assembling a transition team and facing heated talks with musicians over a new labour contract. This resignation highlights the need for a different leadership approach within the institution.
