Outbreak Investigation: Health Officials Identify Source of Nationwide Cucumber-Related Illnesses in the US

In spring, nearly 450 people across the US fell sick from salmonella food poisoning, with one Florida cucumber grower being a likely source. The untreated water used by Bedner Growers matched the strain of bacteria causing the illnesses. While this grower didn't account for all cases, federal health officials identified additional types of salmonella in soil and water samples from their farm. Symptoms of salmonella include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps, with children, elderly, and immunocompromised individuals at risk of severe illness. Bedner Growers recalled cucumbers supplied to Fresh Start Produce Sales after reports of sickness. Investigators combined multiple outbreaks into one due to similar timings and affected demographics. Consumers should avoid recalled cucumbers and sanitize any surfaces that may have come in contact with the produce.
