Perplexity AI Defies Internet Norms, Breaking Basic Rules: Reports

Perplexity, an AI search startup backed by Jeff Bezos, is causing controversy by potentially breaking internet rules to provide users with detailed article summaries. The company appears to be disregarding the Robots Exclusion Protocol, a standard web code meant to block web crawlers from accessing certain parts of websites. Despite claiming to respect this protocol, Perplexity has been found to be using an unlisted IP address to bypass website restrictions and scrape content anyway. Additionally, the company is facing legal threats for copyright infringement after allegedly using Forbes' content without proper attribution. This strategy of providing detailed AI articles bypasses the traditional business model of digital media, as users no longer need to click through to original sources. While Perplexity is exploring partnerships with media companies to address these issues, for now, it continues to skirt internet rules to power its AI answers.
