The Philadelphia Phillies have made a significant roster move by releasing utility player Whit Merrifield and recalling Weston Wilson from Triple-A Lehigh Valley. The decision was announced by Phillies President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski ahead of their game against the Oakland Athletics. Merrifield, 35, struggled this season batting .199 with 11 RBIs in 53 games. The Phillies will owe him $3 million of his $7 million salary. Wilson, 29, returns for a second stint with the Phillies after an impressive run with the IronPigs, where he batted .315 with 10 homers and 20 RBIs in 20 games. His outstanding performance earned him the International League Player of the Week in July. With this move, the Phillies are hoping Wilson can inject some much-needed offense into the lineup and help boost their playoff chances.
