A rare and colossal stegosaurus skeleton, named Apex, set to be auctioned in New York is causing controversy among paleontologists. This 150-million-year-old fossil, consisting of 254 out of 319 bone elements, is the most complete of its size. With an estimated value of $4-6 million, the skeleton is expected to fetch a substantial amount at the upcoming auction. Despite objections from experts, auctions of dinosaur skeletons have become more common, sparking debates over whether these valuable fossils should be privately owned or preserved in public spaces like museums. Apex, discovered on private land, has been meticulously documented and prepared for sale by collaborating with paleontologist Jason Cooper. The auction highlights the ongoing discussion surrounding the sale of significant scientific specimens, with some arguing for the importance of preservation in public institutions for future study and education.
