A major ice cream supplier, Totally Cool, issued a recall notice for products distributed nationwide due to potential listeria contamination. Brands like Hershey's and Friendly's are affected, with more than 65 products recalled including ice cream cakes and sandwiches. The bacterium Listeria monocytogenes was found during an FDA sampling, prompting the recall. While no illnesses have been reported yet, the FDA has advised consumers to return affected products for a refund. Listeria infections can be serious, especially for pregnant or immunocompromised individuals, newborns, and older adults. Symptoms range from fever and vomiting to potentially fatal outcomes. Each year, about 1,600 people in the US contract listeria, with approximately 260 deaths, making it a significant cause of foodborne illness-related fatalities. The company has halted production and distribution of the recalled products to prevent further health risks.
