After the massive breach earlier this year, a new record-breaking leak has emerged, containing nearly 10 billion unique plaintext passwords. The file, titled rockyou2024.txt, was posted on a hacker forum and is a combination of the previous RockYou2021 leak and over 1.5 billion new passwords collected between 2021 and 2024. Cybernews warns that threat actors will likely use these passwords for credential stuffing attacks, leading to potential data breaches, financial fraud, and identity theft.
To protect yourself, reset all passwords associated with the leaked data, create strong and unique passwords, use multi-factor authentication, and consider using password manager software. Regularly checking sites like HaveIBeenPwned.com to monitor the security of your accounts is also recommended. This leak underscores the importance of proactive cybersecurity measures to safeguard personal information in an age of increasing digital threats.
