Redbox, the popular DVD kiosk-rental business, has been forced to shut down following the Chapter 7 liquidation bankruptcy of its parent company, Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment. The company's filing revealed nearly $1 billion in debt and millions owed to entertainment companies and retailers. Redbox, with over 34,000 kiosks across the US, rented 1 billion discs since its launch in 2002. The failure of its parent company's plan to become an entertainment conglomerate, combing DVD rentals with streaming services, was compounded by industry strikes and the decline of physical DVD rentals. Employees, totaling 1,000, were left without severance or benefits amid the shutdown. The bankruptcy filing may allow the company to address unpaid wages and benefits, pending court approval in Delaware. The publishing arm of Chicken Soup for the Soul remains unaffected by the bankruptcy.
