British startup Spectral Compute has introduced SCALE, a GPGPU toolchain enabling NVIDIA's CUDA to operate seamlessly on AMD GPUs without requiring code porting. SCALE aims to break NVIDIA's software stack dominance by opening up CUDA to be compatible with non-NVIDIA GPUs like AMD's, offering a new level of accessibility and flexibility within the industry. According to Spectral Compute's CEO, Michael Sondergaard, the development of SCALE has been ongoing for seven years and allows for a single codebase to be used across multiple hardware platforms, eliminating the need for translation layers. While NVIDIA has expressed concerns about the compatibility of CUDA with external components, Spectral Compute maintains that SCALE is a valuable resource for developers, offering increased adaptability and ease of use across various applications and AMD architectures.
