Russia Declines to Send Wrestlers to Paris Olympics as Neutral Participants

Russia announced that 10 of its wrestlers have chosen to decline spots at the Paris Olympics offered under the Individual Neutral Athlete program. The decision came after a unanimous agreement among officials, coaches, and athletes to boycott the Games. The Russian wrestling federation expressed dissatisfaction with the selection process, claiming that more qualified Russian wrestlers were left out. The federation believes that the integrity of the Olympic Games is at risk without Russian athletes, stating that the champions will not receive the same satisfaction. The IOC had previously set strict criteria for Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete as neutrals, including having no ties to the military or public support for the war in Ukraine. While some Russian athletes have accepted invitations, others, like the judo federation, have opted out. Overall, 23 Russian athletes in seven sports have accepted invitations for the Paris Olympics as of now.
