On July 8, 2024, members of the National Samsung Electronics Union commenced a three-day general strike outside the company's foundry and semiconductor factory in Hwaseong. The strike, stemming from disputes over pay and benefits, has now been extended indefinitely as the union demands a 3.5% increase in base wages, improved pay transparency, and compensation for economic losses incurred during the strike. This marks the first strike in Samsung Electronics' 55-year history, with over 30,000 union members participating. Despite assurances from Samsung that chip production remains unhindered, the NSEU claims otherwise. As the world's largest memory chip maker, any disruption in Samsung's operations could have significant implications. With no resolution in sight, the fate of this labor dispute remains uncertain as both parties remain at an impasse. Additionally, Hyundai Motor recently averted a strike by reaching a wage agreement with its labor union.
