The metal object, weighing 1.6lb and measuring 4in by 1.6in, tore through their house while Otero was on vacation, fortunately, no one was injured. NASA confirmed that the object was a metal support jettisoned from the space station in 2021. The Otero family is seeking $80,000 in compensation for damages including property, business interruption, emotional distress, and third-party assistance costs. Attorney Mica Nguyen Worthy emphasized the seriousness of the space debris issue and stressed the potential catastrophic consequences if the debris had landed differently. This case aims to set a precedent for space debris claims and NASA has six months to respond. The Otero family is grateful no one was physically harmed but seeks justice for the impact this incident had on their lives.
