The Cubs started strong with a Seiya Suzuki home run in the first inning but quickly lost control as Hayden Wesneski struggled, giving up nine runs on 40 pitches. Despite multiple errors and a lost challenge, only two of the runs were earned. Wesneski did manage to pitch three more innings, helping to save the bullpen for a doubleheader. Luckily, the Cubs only had to use Ethan Roberts and Hunter Bigge in relief, setting them up well for Game 2 with Javier Assad returning from the IL. The rough start did not deter Wesneski from soldiering on, showing resilience and determination in a challenging game. With some strong pitching in the later innings, the Cubs managed to limit the damage and set themselves up for a better performance in the upcoming game.
