On Wednesday, June 19, 2024, the United States stock markets, including the Nasdaq and New York Stock Exchange, will be closed in observance of Juneteenth. This holiday, known as American's Second Independence Day, commemorates the proclamation of freedom for over 250,000 enslaved Black people in Texas in 1865, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. While most restaurants, grocery stores, and retail stores will remain open, banks and the United States Postal Service will be closed. This federally-recognized holiday provides millions of Americans with a paid day off to reflect on the end of slavery. After Juneteenth, Wall Street will resume normal operations until the next closure on Thursday, July 4, for Independence Day. For the full 2024 holiday schedule, including closures for Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, refer to the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association.
