Stop & Shop is closing 32 underperforming supermarkets, four of which are on Long Island, by early November. The locations in Greenvale, Coram, Hempstead, and East Meadow are set to close on or before Nov. 2. Stop & Shop president, Gordon Reid, expressed the company's commitment to supporting its associates, customers, and communities despite the closures. Although the chain is the largest grocer on Long Island, with 50 stores accounting for 31.6% of the market share, the rise of discount and nontraditional grocers has increased competition. The decision to close stores is part of a strategic evaluation to ensure the future growth of the brand. After the closings, Stop & Shop will operate 359 supermarkets across five states, with 81 stores in Connecticut, 115 in Massachusetts, 47 in New Jersey, 91 in New York, and 25 in Rhode Island.
