A recent study suggests that AI-generated ideas can enhance the creativity of writers who may lack inherent flair, although at the cost of variety. Researchers from the University of Exeter found that while AI assistance may be beneficial for individuals, using it widely could lead to a loss of diverse and unique ideas in society. Participants in the study who received AI-generated ideas experienced an increase in novelty and usefulness ratings for their stories, with greater access to AI resulting in a larger effect. Interestingly, writers with low inherent creativity benefited the most from AI assistance. However, the study also found that AI-generated ideas led to stories with greater similarity, possibly due to the predictability of the AI-generated ideas. The authors highlight the need for further evaluation of AI's role in creative endeavors to ensure that the benefits are maximized while avoiding potential drawbacks.
