Principal Financial Group's Retirement Security Survey revealed that a surprising number of American workers, 59%, who were not enrolled in a 401(k), believed they were contributing to one. The survey targeted 1,110 employees who thought they were saving for retirement, only to find out they were not. This confusion highlights a need for clearer communication between employers and employees regarding retirement savings. Research shows that when given the option, roughly 80% of workers enroll in a 401(k) plan. To address the confusion, automatic enrollment in retirement plans could be a solution, as it has shown to significantly increase participation rates. Starting in 2025, new 401(k) plans must automatically enroll employees, as mandated by the SECURE Act 2.0. Employers can also play a role in educating employees about their retirement plans and the importance of saving for the future.
