Legendary surfer Tamayo Perry was tragically killed in a shark attack off Oahu’s North Shore, where he was known for conquering huge waves and appearing in films like “Pirates of the Caribbean.” First responders received a 911 call reporting his fatal injuries, and Perry was declared dead after being brought ashore. Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi praised Perry’s bravery and dedication as a lifeguard, calling him a “legendary waterman and highly respected.” Perry grew up near the famous Pipeline surfing spot, winning the Pipeline Masters trials in 1999 and taking on massive swells worldwide. While shark encounters in Hawaii are common, deaths from water sports are rare, with Perry’s being the first this year in surfing and other activities. The surfing community mourns the loss of this beloved icon.
