UAB Health System is set to expand its reach by acquiring Ascension Saint Vincent's Health System, a move that will include five hospitals in Birmingham, Pell City, Oneonta, and Clanton, as well as other facilities and clinics. This acquisition, with an estimated cost of $450 million, will significantly increase UAB's medical footprint in the state. The deal was approved by the UAB Health System Board and is expected to be finalized in the fall pending approval from state regulatory agencies and the Catholic Church. Patients of Saint Vincent's have expressed concerns about potential impacts on their care, but UAB reassures that their access to world-class care will not be disrupted. Job security for the approximately 5,000 caregivers and associates at Ascension is also assured, with comparable compensation and benefits anticipated. UAB plans to make financial investments in Ascension clinics and infrastructure, with further details to be revealed in the coming months.
