United Airlines is implementing a new strategy to keep its passengers informed about flight delays caused by bad weather. The airline will now send passengers live radar maps via text message to prove that weather conditions are genuinely affecting their flights, even on bright sunny days. Thunderstorms miles away can disrupt flight schedules, with the Federal Aviation Administration sometimes issuing ground stops to manage airport traffic. United will also notify passengers of other causes of flight disruptions, such as mechanical issues or airport congestion, using generative artificial intelligence. This new technology will be tested during the busy July Fourth holiday period when United expects a record number of passengers. FlightAware data shows that in the first half of the year, over 21% of U.S. airline flights arrived late due to various disruptions.
