The US has announced a ban on the sale of Russian-made Kaspersky antivirus software due to alleged links to the Kremlin. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo stated that Moscow's influence over the company poses a risk to US infrastructure and services. The ban will prevent Kaspersky from selling software and providing updates within the US. The company plans to fight the ban and denies any threats to US security. This action is part of a broader plan to restrict transactions with foreign adversary nations like Russia. The ban will bar software updates, resales, and new business within 30 days of the announcement. Sellers and resellers who violate the restrictions will face fines. The Commerce Department will also list Kaspersky units for allegedly cooperating with Russian military intelligence. Despite having offices in 31 countries and millions of users worldwide, the company has faced scrutiny from US regulators, including a previous ban from federal networks in 2017.
