The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has referred a complaint against TikTok and its parent company ByteDance over potential violations of children's privacy to the Department of Justice (DOJ). The FTC investigation found reason to believe that both companies are violating or are on the brink of violating the law. This case is separate from the legislation that could ban TikTok in the US if ByteDance does not sell the business. The FTC focused on potential violations of the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and the FTC Act. TikTok expressed disappointment in the decision, stating they have been working with the FTC to address concerns. However, the agency decided to pursue litigation, prompting TikTok to disagree with the allegations and express a desire to find a reasonable solution.
