Over 250,000 Volkswagen Atlas SUVs are being recalled due to a potential issue with the front passenger airbag not functioning properly. The Passenger Occupant Detection System (PODS) may experience wiring faults, leading to the deactivation of the airbag when the seat is occupied, as stated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). A total of 271,330 model year 2021-2024 Atlas vehicles and model year 2020-2024 Atlas Cross Sport vehicles are affected. Until the vehicles are fixed, passengers are advised to avoid sitting in the front seat to prevent injury risk in the event of an accident. Volkswagen will replace the PODS sensor mat and wiring harness with improved parts for affected vehicles at no cost. Notification letters will be sent to customers in August, and the recall affects vehicles produced between October 2020 and June 2021.
