Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco has been formally charged by prosecutors in the Dominican Republic with sexually abusing a 14-year-old girl. The charges were brought after a judge ordered an investigation into allegations of sexual and psychological abuse against the minor. The indictment also includes the girl's mother, whom prosecutors claim was paid thousands of dollars by Franco to consent to the relationship, which lasted four months. Franco, currently on administrative leave by Major League Baseball, has not played since August 2021 as MLB continues its investigation. His lawyer stated that Franco has not received formal notification of charges. Despite being on administrative leave, Franco continues to be paid his $2 million salary while remaining in the Dominican Republic. The All-Star shortstop signed an $182 million, 11-year contract in 2021.
