More than 800 WestJet flights have been cancelled, affecting the travel plans of over 110,000 passengers due to a strike by 680 mechanics over salary and working conditions. The Airplane Mechanics Fraternal Association and the airline failed to reach a deal, leading to the work stoppage that has reduced WestJet's fleet to only 32 active aircraft. WestJet President and CEO apologized for the inconvenience caused to travellers and emphasized the unwarranted damage being inflicted on the airline and the country due to the strike. Despite efforts by the Minister of Labour calling for binding arbitration, the strike has persisted, with the union rejecting a proposed wage increase from the airline. The ongoing conflict highlights the challenges faced by both parties in reaching a resolution, leaving thousands of travellers stranded during the Canada Day long weekend.
