In a recent interview, Telegram's founder Pavel Durov claimed to be the only product manager at the company, with only about 30 engineers. Security experts are concerned as this small team may not be equipped to handle the security risks associated with the platform. Unlike Signal and WhatsApp, Telegram does not have default end-to-end encryption, leaving user data vulnerable. The use of a proprietary encryption algorithm also raises doubts about the security of the platform. Eva Galperin of the Electronic Frontier Foundation highlights that Telegram's role as a social media platform means it holds a significant amount of user data without adequate resources for legal requests, abuse, and content moderation. With such a small team dedicated to cybersecurity, experts warn that Telegram may not be equipped to defend against hackers, particularly government-backed ones. The lack of transparency around security practices and the absence of a chief security officer raise further concerns about the platform's security.
